What are mailing servers?

Mailing servers are servers that, in addition to standard Internet services (such as www, databases, e-mail), allow primarily for efficient, mass mailing of company e-mails. Such servers must be properly configured for mailings, otherwise messages could be blocked by the spam protection of recipient servers. Normal, standard e-mail services have large restrictions and restrictive daily limits on sending e-mails. The mailing server is a great technical solution that allows you to send mass emails sent from a mailing application.

What does the installation and configuration of a mailing server look like at Smart Webtechnologies?

The correct installation and configuration of mailing servers consists of the following elements:

  1. Operating system installation
    The first step when installing a mailing server is to install the operating system on a dedicated server or VPS server. The most commonly installed Linux distributions include Debian and Ubuntu, as well as Centos.
  2. Exim mail server configuration

    The Exim mail server available on the server is specially configured for mass mailing. The more efficient the server, the more emails can be sent per day. Already the basic mailing servers offered by Smart Webtechnologies allow you to send several hundred thousand emails per day – the more powerful ones allow you to send even several million emails without problems and restrictions during the day.

  3. Mailing server management
    Panel Vesta or Panel Plesk are used for convenient server management directly through a web browser. Using the appropriate panel, the user can, among others:
    configure domain and DNS records,
    add FTP accounts that allow you to put files on the server (e.g. photos and graphics),
    add email accounts and configure them (e.g. set up redirection),
    add databases,
    add Cron tasks,
    set up backups on external servers.
  4. Encryption – SSL certificate
    An SSL certificate is required for encrypted mailing. It is installed as standard and secures not only the encrypted connection to the server administration panel and to the mailing application, but also encrypts e-mail sent from and to the server.
  5. Address authentication – DKIM reference number
    The DKIM signature is required by spam filters on recipient’s hosting servers. DKIM is installed on a server for a given domain and protects against impersonation of the sender. The DKIM signature proves to other hosting servers that the sender and the message from him are not counterfeit. No DKIM signature on the sender’s server may result in automatic forwarding of incoming messages to the SPAM folder.
  6. Increased deliverability – SPF Record
    The SPF record is one of the most-used anti-spam protection on external servers. This is another way to authenticate your email address. The SPF record added to the mailing server confirms to recipients that the incoming mail comes from the sender authorized by the domain – mailings without an SPF record are often directed to SPAM.
  7. Return DNS for spam filters – RevDNS
    The RevDNS record is also configured during the installation of the mailing server. It’s so-called reverse DNS, which allows you to find a domain that is associated with IP.   8. Checking server IP address
